St. Spyridon the Wonderworker, Bp. of Tremithus

#VladimirDjambov; #Orthodox; #Talmach; #PraBlah

Troparion — Tone 1

You were revealed as a champion of the First Council /
and a wonderworker, our God-bearing father Spyridon. /
You spoke to one dead in the grave /
and transformed a serpent into gold. /
While chanting your holy prayers /
you had angels serving with you! /
Glory to Him Who gave you strength! /
Glory to Him Who granted you a crown! /
Glory to Him Who through you grants healing to all!

Kontakion — Tone 2

Wounded by the love of Christ, /
all-holy one, your mind was given
wings through the light of the Spirit, /
you found work in active contemplation,
God-pleasing Spyridon, /
becoming a divine sacrifice, /
and imploring divine illumination for all.

Dec. 19th, 2020 [svidetel, attestor]

                                                                                    Translated from Russian

Dec. 19th, 2020

Another level of salvific sadness, not despondency, but love expressed this way – a higher one which is that you begin to cry not for yourself, not for your forlorn life, not for yourself, or even for your sins, which is already salvific in the stead of pity for yourself (this is very difficult to overcome and it is difficult to move on to a higher, more purely spiritual [level], to overcome your human mental anguish, and move on to spiritual experience), not even for your relatives and friends [kin], – but to cry for the human race, starting at least [and this is important] from your country.

Unhappy and pitiful, such are the good, even cute, in essence, and calm as if sleeping – you are all [fully] open before the Lord, your whole life before Him, – what do you hope for, not seeing the terrible danger that threatens you, and which you now in your condition cannot escape? Where are you going, not realizing that you are passing by the most important thing that could [possibly] save you? Not taking a thought, light-headedly, taking comfort for yourself with some kind of consolation, fleeting consolations, and self-deception? What is valuable in your life? – a moment shall pass, and you will forget what you were chasing, what you ruined your priceless life for. Virtually as if the winds are blowing and you take up away with them.

What's the point in this? There is no point!

Like little children, you – adults who consider themselves super-smart, what are you doing? Well, indeed this is nothing ...

Miserable and blind - you cause only pain with your emptiness and meaningless unwillingness for the Truth. Your condition causes [the] endless sorrow of hell, exactly the same as all sinful souls see [it] there: a hopeless, heartbreaking, never-saturable melancholy of which there is no limit or end, [virtually] as if all these endless "no-nesses" associated with what you consider to be life were united together ... The desert, the icy wilderness as the gloomy kingdom of Tartar, and the scorched land of the spiritual desert from where there is no return.

How to leave you, and what is to be with you? – this is only an excruciating pain. How to live in this desert where there is no place for anything truly living, fruit-bearing? Why is this so, O Lord? How to pray for you if you do not hear a word or a sound of the prayer, and not a single heart of yours would rise, would will heaven? How to ask for you if you have already died and it is impossible to resurrect you?

Lord, what is this endless pain for when it comes? - and it comes [quite] often. Where is the end to this, and will that be in something?...

The Lie

The Lie

Go, soul, the body's guest,
Upon a thankless errand;
Fear not to touch the best;
The truth shall be thy warrant:
Go, since I needs must die,
And give the world the lie.

Say to the court, it glows
And shines like rotten wood;
Say to the church, it shows
What's good, and doth no good:
If church and court reply,
Then give them both the lie.

Tell potentates, they live
Acting by others' action;
Not loved unless they give,
Not strong but by a faction.
If potentates reply,
Give potentates the lie.

Tell men of high condition,
That manage the estate,
Their purpose is ambition,
Their practice only hate:
And if they once reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell them that brave it most,
They beg for more by spending,
Who, in their greatest cost,
Seek nothing but commending.
And if they make reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell zeal it wants devotion;
Tell love it is but lust;
Tell time it is but motion;
Tell flesh it is but dust:
And wish them not reply,
For thou must give the lie.

Tell age it daily wasteth;
Tell honour how it alters;
Tell beauty how she blasteth;
Tell favour how it falters:
And as they shall reply,
Give every one the lie.

Tell wit how much it wrangles
In tickle points of niceness;
Tell wisdom she entangles
Herself in overwiseness:
And when they do reply,
Straight give them both the lie.

Tell physic of her boldness;
Tell skill it is pretension;
Tell charity of coldness;
Tell law it is contention:
And as they do reply,
So give them still the lie.

Tell fortune of her blindness;
Tell nature of decay;
Tell friendship of unkindness;
Tell justice of delay:
And if they will reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell arts they have no soundness,
But vary by esteeming;
Tell schools they want profoundness,
And stand too much on seeming:
If arts and schools reply,
Give arts and schools the lie.

Tell faith it's fled the city;
Tell how the country erreth;
Tell manhood shakes off pity
And virtue least preferreth:
And if they do reply,
Spare not to give the lie.

So when thou hast, as I
Commanded thee, done blabbing--
Although to give the lie
Deserves no less than stabbing--
Stab at thee he that will,
No stab the soul can kill.

To [a Mohammedan] Seduce the World...

https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2010/02/saint-john-kalphes-neomartyr.html

One is the true God and our Lord Jesus Christ. However, Mohammed, in whom you believe, was a mortal and uneducated man, and he did no good in this world, he worked no single miracle, contrary to the other prophets of God that we, Christians, have. Only you esteem him for a prophet, while in actual fact he was a theomachist – and with his fabrications and fantasies he attracted to himself simple and ignorant people, so that what had been foreordained in him came true, namely that he "will come to seduce the world."

You - and God
tête-à-tête

T A L M A C H
so much and simple

The Language of God:
Francis S. Collins

T A L M A C H
so much and simple

(Божий Язык ) Доказательство Бога: Аргументы ученого чтоб поверить

Год выпуска: 2006
Автор: Francis S. Collins / Фрэнсис Коллинз
Исполнитель: Francis S. Collins
Язык: Английский
Тип: аудиокнига
Аудио кодек: MP3
Битрейт аудио: 64 kbps
Описание:
Collins, a pioneering medical geneticist who once headed the Human Genome Project, adapts his title from President Clinton's remarks announcing completion of the first phase of the project in 2000: "Today we are learning the language in which God created life." Collins explains that as a Christian believer, "the experience of sequencing the human genome, and uncovering this most remarkable of all texts, was both a stunning scientific achievement and an occasion of worship." This marvelous book combines a personal account of Collins's faith and experiences as a genetics researcher with discussions of more general topics of science and spirituality, especially centering around evolution. Following the lead of C.S. Lewis, whose Mere Christianity was influential in Collins's conversion from atheism, the book argues that belief in a transcendent, personal God — and even the possibility of an occasional miracle — can and should coexist with a scientific picture of the world that includes evolution. Addressing in turn fellow scientists and fellow believers, Collins insists that "science is not threatened by God; it is enhanced" and "God is most certainly not threatened by science; He made it all possible." Collins's credibility as a scientist and his sincerity as a believer make for an engaging combination, especially for those who, like him, resist being forced to choose between science and God.

Prayer

O blessed and holy fathers, reverends, saints, Hieromartyrs and reverend martyrs, myrrh-streamers and miracle workers, Angels of the earth and people of the Heaveninhabitants and adornment of the Holy Mountains, after the Theotokos, intercession of ours before the Lord, benefactors and edifiers, the royal victorious militia, who in the flesh have defeated the incorporeal demons, myrrh-flavored flowers of the Queen of Heaven, the Most Pure Theotokos, the bright-fruitful trees of this mental paradise of the Ever-Virgin, rivers of ever-flowing spiritual gifts! DO Accept this commendable word, that we bring to you, as the Lord accepted the widow's two mites, as well as DO embrace the common feast, celebrated by us in your honor and comemoration, as aroma of fragrance and a favorable offering: as we have nothing else to offer as our duty to our benefactors for the great good deeds we have received and have yet to receive from you. Hey, we DO confess for we are not worthy due to our sins for to live in this place and be called your sons, but out of your goodness, do not refuse to be our fathers. Do not forget us the humble ones, but keep your holy monasteries and all the sketes and cells and us who live in them, preserve and deliver from every temptation and misfortune in this life, in the ages to come that through your holy we may be blessed together with you - sons with their fathers - the flock with its shepherds, the disciples with their teachers, and that we may hear from you that blessed voice to the Lord: behold, we all and the children which Thou hast given us, Lord! And, rejoicing, may we give all glory, honor and worship to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Synaxisl of All Saints
Resplendent in the Russian Land

The second Sunday after Pentecost is “the Sunday of All Saints who shone forth in the land of Russia” — the Church glorifies the assembly of the righteous and martyrs, as glorified and known only to God. This is the feast of all Holy Rus'.

There were not as many saints as the people who lived on our land gave anywhere else. The Gospel says: " The sower went out to sow ." The Lord sowed the word of God in all nations, and each of them reacted to it in their own way. Holiness is man's answer to the call of God.
God came to earth to call everyone. He said: “ Many are called". We live in an age when there is not a single person left on earth, with the exception of small children, who have not yet heard about Jesus Christ. The very sound of His name already gives rise to certain associations. In any case, everyone knows that This Man said about Himself that He is the Son of God, descended from Heaven. And everyone knows that He was born from the Virgin Mary, who was crucified on the Cross ...

But the reaction of the human heart to this event is completely different. Unfortunately, most people are not interested in this topic. They do not even bother to find out what Christ said while living on earth; what He did when He walked two thousand years ago in Palestine; how it happened that, although everything shows that he was a good man, he was crucified. The life of Jesus Christ is of no interest to the majority of those living on earth - that is, although the call is heard to their ears, people do not give an answer to it. The Lord has come to all. Of course, He began with His chosen people, who already then knew the One God. But this people in their mass rejected Him, just as now our people in their mass completely rejected Christ - and, by the way, for the same reason. This, apparently, is the lot of mankind in general - to reject God. But there were people who responded to this call. How did their response to God come about? In the example of the apostles, those first saints of the New Testament, we see how this happens.

The Gospel of Matthew tells how the Lord called the apostles Andrew, Peter, James and John. He came to the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers throwing nets into the sea, and said to them: Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. So are the sons of Zebedee.
Imagine a picture - fishermen catch fish. This is the source of their existence: from this fish they feed, from this fish they dress and maintain their homes. And so He calls them - they throw it all away, i.e. completely and forever leave and follow Him. And James and John even left their father, and Peter left his wife at home and began to follow Christ. Few people can do such a thing - for the sake of Christ to give up everything like that. Therefore, few people can be an apostle ...
The history of the holiday
Instructive history of the holiday. Since the 16th century, there has been a celebration in our Church of the memory of " All Saints New Russian Wonderworkers ."  It was performed on July 17 (according to the old style), that is, on the third day of the memory of the Baptist of Russia - St. Prince Vladimir.

The traditional author of the service for this holiday is considered to be the monk Gregory from the Suzdal Savior-Evfimiev Monastery (he compiled its text, obviously, in the middle of the 16th century). Two of its editions are known under the title " Service to all Russian miracle workers " (Grodno and Suprasl, in the same 1786).
But in central Russia, for some reason, this holiday did not become widespread, was actually forgotten and was not included in the printed Monthly Books, and its text was not published. Obviously, the trials sent by God to a powerful country and the state Church seemed to many to be overcome on their own. Only the catastrophe of 1917 made me seriously turn to help from Above.
It is significant that the initiator of the recreation of the holiday was the brilliant historian and orientalist prof. Petrograd University (now St. Petersburg State University) acad. Boris Alexandrovich Turaev (†1920), employee of the Liturgical Department of the Holy Local Council of the Orthodox Russian Church in 1917-1918.
In his report, he emphasized the fact that "the service compiled in Great Russia found particular distribution on the periphery of the Russian Church, on its western outskirts and even beyond its borders at the time of the division of Russia, when the loss of national and political unity was especially acutely felt. ... In our mournful time, when united Russia became torn apart, when our sinful generation trampled upon the fruits of the exploits of the Saints who worked in the caves of Kiev, and in Moscow, and in the Thebaid of the North, and in Western Russia on the creation of a single Orthodox Russian Church, - it would seem timely to restore this forgotten holiday, let it remind us and our rejected brothers from generation to generation about the One Orthodox Russian Church, and let it be a small tribute to our sinful generation and a small atonement for our sin

.

The Holy Council, in its meeting on August 13/26, 1918, on the name day of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon, heard the report of B. Turaev and, after discussing it, adopted the following resolution

2. This celebration takes place on the first Sunday of Petrovsky Lent. » The council assumed that this holiday, which has a special meaning for us, should become, as it were, a temple for all Orthodox churches in Russia. Thus, it is no coincidence that this holiday was restored (and actually re-introduced) at the beginning of the period of the most severe persecution of Christianity in its entire nineteen-century history.

It is characteristic that its content, as suggested by B. Turaev, has become more universal: it is no longer just a celebration of Russian saints, but the triumph of all Holy Russia, not triumphal, but repentant, forcing us to evaluate our past and draw lessons from it for the creation of the Church in new conditions.
The compilers of the texts of the service were B. Turaev himself, a member of the Council and an employee of its Liturgical Commission, and a priest. Athanasius (Sakharov) (later Bishop of Kovrov, †1962; now canonized as a confessor, commemorated October 15/28).
The original version of the service was published as a separate brochure in the same 1918. Later, the text was supplemented; The work was also attended by Mr. Sergius (Stragorodsky) (he owns the troparion), Fr. Sergiy Durylin and others.

The first church in honor of All Russian Saints was the house church of Petrograd University. Its rector from 1920 until its closure in 1924 was the priest Vladimir Lozina-Lozinsky, who was shot in 1937.
After the cessation of direct persecution of the Church in the 40s of the XX century. the text of the service was printed with censorship distortions that destroyed all indications of the new martyrs (on the instructions of the Soviet authorities, this “editing” was zealously carried out by the LDA inspector Prof. L. N. Pariyskiy).
Only in 1995 was it published as a separate book “ Service to All Saints, in the Russian Land Resplendent". Although this holiday actually continues the theme of the last celebration of the Color Triodi (“All Saints”), they did not begin to supplement this Greek book at its core. In 2002, the text of the service to All Russian Saints was included in the May Menaion (part 3).

Faith and repentance - these are the foundations of spiritual life that turned "original Russia", pagan into holy Russia, and while we are still aware of our sinfulness and keep faith in the living saving God, we have the hope that the expression "Holy Russia" for our time is not a historical anachronism. The invincibility of the ideal of holiness and the sense of their own sinfulness in the Russian people made it possible for the conversion of the legendary Kudeyar Ataman and the real robber Opta, the founder of Optina Pustyn.
There are much more unknown saints in Russia than those who have been recognized and canonized. This also needs to be remembered. And when we see today that everyday life does not coincide with the popular print, we need to change the focus of vision - to notice innocence, sacrifice, selflessness and courage in everyday life. After all, it was not in the clothes, in the end, and not in the length of the beard that Orthodoxy was hidden. It is in the fulfillment of the commandments, in the memory of God. It is in the prayer that cannot be blown out, in the Liturgy that will not cease to be served. In a word, happy holiday to you, beloved! You, holy men of God, who have been brought up on our lands for Paradise, pray to Christ for the gift of reason to distinguish the main from the secondary, and the ability to extract the great from the insignificant. Then, according to the word of Jeremiah, we will be like the mouth of the Lord. Amen

Troparion Tone 8
Like a red fruit of Your salvific sowing, the Russian land brings Thee, Lord, all the saints, to have shone forth in it. With those prayers, keep the Church and our country in deep peace O Theotokos, Many-merciful.

Another Troparion of all Russian saints Tone 4
You citizens of the Most High Jerusalem, / having shone forth from our land / and having pleased God in every order / and every exploit, / come, let us sing, O faithful: / O intercessor for the all-blessed land of the Rus', / pray to the Lord, / that He pardon us of His wrath, / heal its contrition, / and comfort His faithful people.

Kontakion Tone 3

Today, the assembly of the saints, who have pleased God in our land, stands in the Church and invisibly prays to God for us. Angels glorify with it, and all the saints of the Church of Christ worship Him, praying for us all in one to the Eternal God.

Kontakion of All Russian holy Tone 6
You vigilant leaders of our country, /  unceasing intercessors for us to the Creator, / do not despise our prayers, / but, come to help in in anticipation, like our relatives, / hasten us to prayer / and try to beg, / always interceding about those who honor you.

Magnification of the saints
We bless you, / our glorious wonderworkers, / who by your virtues have illumined the Russian land / to also sacredly show / the image of salvation to us.

Another magnification of the saints
We magnify you, / all saints, who shone forth in the lands of Rus', / and we honor your holy memory, / DO pray for us / to Christ our Lord.

Prayer to all the saints of the Russian land

O [you] all-blessed and God-wise pleasers of God, who by your exploits of yours have sanctified the Russian land and in your flesh, as the seed of faith, have remained in it, standing with your souls before the Throne of God and praying unceasingly for it! Now, on the day of your common triumph, we, sinners, your lesser brethren, dare to bring you this laudatory singing. We magnify your great deeds, you spiritual warriors of Christ, who overthrew the enemy with patience and courage to the end, and who deliver us from his charms and wiles. We bless your holy life, O Divine luminaries, shining with the light of faith and virtues and illuminating our minds and hearts in divine wisdom. We glorify your great miracles, you flowers of Paradise, who have flourished beautifully in our Northern country, and wgo spread the aroma everywhere of your gifts and miracles. We praise your God-imitating love, our intercessors and patrons, and, relying on your help, we fall down to you and cry out: all you holy relatives of ours, who shone from the ancient years and who labored in the last days, made known and not, known and unknown! Remember our weakness and humiliation and with your prayers ask of Christ our God, that we, too, may safely sail through the abyss of life and keeping unharmed the treasure of faith, in the haven of eternal salvation we may also reach  the blessed adobe of the On-High Fatherland, together with you and with all the saints who have pleased Him from time immemorial we may be vouchsafed to dwell in the grace and love of mankind of our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ, to Him, with the Eternal Father and with the Most Holy Spirit, unceasing praise and worship from all creatures for ever and ever befits. Amen.

A Prayer Before Communion
by St Dimitry of Rostov

Open, O doors and bolts of my heart
that Christ the King of Glory may enter!
Enter, O my Light and enlighten my darkness;
enter, O my Life, and resurrect my deadness;
enter, O my Physician and heal my wounds;
enter, O Divine Fire, and burn up the thorns of my sins;
ignite my inward parts and my heart with the flame of Thy love;
enter, O my King, and destroy in me the kingdom of sin;
sit on the throne of my heart and [You] alone reign in me,
O Thou, my King and Lord.
